WORLD HANDICAP SYSTEM

Player's Handicap Index now follows the new World Handicap System.  This allow players to play on courses around the world using their handicap index and play with people from other countries using the same handicap system

POSTING YOUR SCORES
Post your scores as usual at the course or through the Internet (use My NCGA app or the NCGA.com website).  The only change to your posted score is the maximum score on a hole is Net Double Bogey (see #3 below)

5 THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THE WORLD HANDICAP SYSTEM

1.     The Handicap Index (H.I.) calculation is changing.  Your number will be based off your 8 best scores out of the past 20.  Your H.I. will not be drastically different from your last number

2.     You will have a Playing Handicap.  The Slope Rating and now the Course Rating and Par will be used to determine your Playing Handicap, allowing players to compete from different tees more easily

3.     Net Double Bogey will replace ESC.  The maximum hole score for handicap purposes will be limited to Net Double Bogey (Par + 2 + any handicap strokes you receive on that hole)

4.     Your Handicap Index will update the day after you post a score (Daily if you play every day.  Previously, updates were 2x a month)

5.     Safeguards have been added to protect your H.I.  The system will account for abnormal playing conditions, limit extreme upward movement of a H.I. and reduce a H.I. when an exceptional score is posted

LOCAL RULES & RULINGS

LOST BALL CONCESSION   (2/7/2017)

The Board of Directors on Feb 7, 2017 reiterated a ruling on how to play a lost ball when a provisional is not played in SSSGC events.

First of all, a player should always hit a provisional ball whenever there is a chance of the ball going Out of Bounds (OB) or not finding his ball.

However, to speed up play, if a player cannot find his ball and did not hit a provisional, he must take a drop where he thinks the ball was lost and take a 2 stroke penalty instead of going back to the previous spot and hitting another ball.

As an example, if his tee shot is lost, he is lying 3, hitting 4.

LIFT, CLEAN & PLACE

When Lift, Clean & Place is allowed, it may be "only in the fairway" you are playing OR it may be "through the green" (everywhere except for hazards).

MAX HANDICAP RAISED   (8/2/2016)

The maximum handicap index for SSSGC members was raised from 36.4 to 45.0 in both Home and Away events

This increased the H.I. of 5 of our members in 2016 and 2 members in 2018

OUT-OF-BOUNDS REMOVED  (12/12/2016)

OB markers between holes # 1 & 2 and also between # 16 & 17 have been removed at Sunnyvale Muni.

OB markers are placed inside a golf course to prevent players from using adjacent fairways to gain an advantage. Since there is no advantage to being in #2 fairway when playing hole #1, the OB has been removed.  Same reason for removing the OB on #16.

FROM OUR HANDICAP CHAIRMAN

When players compete from different tees, an adjustment is necessary to account for the difference in COURSE RATINGS between the tees

For example, at Sunnyvale:
Course Rating for the Men's White tees = 67.9
Course Rating for the Men's Red tees   = 65.4
The difference between the two ratings is 2.5 which rounds up to 3 strokes

So an adjustment of 3 strokes must be ADDED to the Course Handicap of the higher rated (WHITE Tee) player OR alternatively, DEDUCTED from the Course Handicap of the lower rated (RED Tee) player

NEW GIFT CERTIFICATE SYSTEM

In January 2017, a new system for gift certificates/cards was started at SV Muni.

A plastic card with an assigned number has been issued to each member of the club.  This is his account card.

When a member wins at either a home or away event, that amount is credited to his account.  The member can then use the winnings in his account at the pro shop.   This system is similar to a debit card.

REFER A NEW MEMBER - Get A Free Round of Golf    (8/14/15)

A free round (green fees) at Sunnyvale Muni GC will be given to a member who refers a new member to the club ("referred by" on the membership form).

When SSSGC receives the new member's application form and check, a credit for green fees will be placed in the account of the referring member.  The member must be identified on the form as the referring member.

Members can use the credit to pay for green fees or merchandise at the pro shop.
